appear ageless to hiring managers and recruiters.
Many older job seekers blame ageism for why they can’t find a decent paying job.
“Younger candidates are willing to do the same job for half the pay.”
Or they feel like their extensive experience is ignored by biased gatekeepers that don’t evaluate them based on their skills.
“Recruiter and hiring managers look at only what I have been doing for the past six years and not the sum of my extensive experience."
Or worse, the years of raises, bonuses, and benefits isn’t proof of their professional expertise, it’s actually hurting their chances of landing their next job.
“I keep being told I’m overqualified for the position I’m applying for, and that my salary simply won’t fit in the budget.”
They even feel like the employment gaps on their resume are treated with higher scrutiny than younger candidates.
"It seems like hiring managers get hung up on the fact that I was out of work for a period of time.”
BUT...I want you to ask yourself the following questions:
Are you able to interview confidently online or by phone? Or do you insist on an in-person interview?
Have you kept your skills current?
Is your body language telling a hiring manager that you're uncomfortable simply because they are younger than you?
If any of these questions touched a nerve, you are probably doing something that is contributing to the perception of you being outdated.
Don’t get me wrong, ageism exists. I know it happens, and it's wrong. But being outdated is not ageism. It’s being outdated.
Here is the bad news: You cannot change your age.
Here is the good news: You can fix the behaviors that make you look like an unused, moth-eaten suit from 1999.
Yes. Ageism is real. 100%. The gut check you must do is what you are experiencing ageism (which is always wrong) or your outdated tactics being rejected. You can’t control how old you are … but you can fix your outdated tactics.
Yes. Of course. Our oldest client is 84 so you are a spring chicken by comparison. But, you need to make sure your outward presentation focuses on ageless facts, figures, and leadership accomplishments. We can show you how to do this.
Honestly, mindset goes a long way here but there are very specific actions you can take in your resume and LinkedIn to ensure you don't look outdated and past your hire-by-date.
